I would be remiss if I started a blog in the year 2009 and did not pause to remark on the times we are currently living in. The times can be summarized in one word - UNCERTAIN. What we felt was a country largely indestructible and indomitable due to a great capitalist system that could surely only bring about vast amounts of prosperity and democracy has completely changed with the current economic crisis. We watch the news helplessly knowing that something in the very essence of our society and culture has gone gravely amiss. Even worse is the realization that those we thought were the very intelligent gate keepers of the past economic model maintained by light regulation, debt and dependence on financial services, are now not only partly to blame, but have no consequence or ramifications to deal with.
As we continue to learn everyday about: yet another bailout request; the demise of yet another imperative sector of our economy; additional job losses; the new Barry Maddof of the day; Citibank’s plan to purchase a 50 million dollar corporate jet(!?) while at the same time we read about a Michigan man slowly freezing to death because he’s electricity got cut off, we can’t help but wonder when this collapse will finally trickle down and hit our neighborhood, subdivision, place of employment and God forbid our own home and family. As we wait for a panacea and or any answer, we are slowly realizing that it will have to take a new and complete change not only in global thinking and living, but a paradigm shift in our view of current moral, ethical, societal and cultural ways --- then just maybe we will overcome our current and future economic uncertainty.
